Chapter Six

Chess’s body still felt like it was buzzing, as if his finger were stuck in an electrical socket. He had been stun-gunned before as part of his police academy training, but that experience was nothing compared to how he felt now. Before, his body had locked up, and he had fallen onto a mat. Once it was done, there had been zero aftereffects. This time, the electrical jolt had completely knocked him out, which meant he hadn’t been hit with an ordinary stun gun.

It certainly explained how the culprit was able to kidnap weres. The gun had easily overcome Chess’s extra healing powers that should have kept him awake and fighting.

Chess worked to keep his breathing even and his body limp. There was no point in alerting his attacker that he was awake. He took a couple of breaths in through his nose and immediately wished he hadn’t. The place smelled old, like must and decay, but there was a tart undertone of fear and despair. Wherever Chess was must be the same place the other weres had been held. Which begged the question, why wasn’t his wrist confined in silver? His wrists and ankles weren’t even tied with basic rope. It was definitely odd.

If he was going to escape and get back to Ryker, he had to take stock of his situation. He slit one eye open the barest amount and only saw the dusty gray concrete floor he was lying on and an equally gray concrete wall a few feet ahead. Chess would have to roll over or sit up to actually determine where he was.

There was no sense in waiting. Chess sat up in one swift move with his feet underneath his body so he could jump to his feet if he needed to. Except, one glance around the room showed he was alone. It was a fairly large space, maybe ten feet wide in all directions, and built all of concrete. In the side wall across from him was a thick chain bolted into the wall. The manacle at the end was open, but Chess wasn’t about to go anywhere near it. It was strange enough that it wasn’t already around his wrist; he didn’t want to tempt fate. In the center wall was a doorway with a small glass window set high in the frame. It was the only way he could see to get in and out of the room, so Chess walked over to look out the window.

He was in the middle of an empty courtyard surrounded on all sides by a building of some kind. It felt like a bomb shelter, but Chess knew better. It wasn’t underground, for one, and for another, this wasn’t Israel where terrorists chucked bombs over the border regularly. There was no need for a bomb shelter here. It had to be a containment room to hold dangerous chemicals or to conduct potentially dangerous experiments. The building Chess could see outside must belong to a business that did those sorts of things.
